In “WelcometoMyMuseumofAmerica,” writer Emily Keegin looks at 25 objects that define what it means to be American today. This digital iteractive piece was published by The New York Times Opinion desk.

Ranging from a Costco rotisserie chicken (“Americans want the same things: $4.99 rotisserie chickens, $1.50 hot dogs and a cart full of enough stuff to survive a nuclear winter.”) to Goop’s infamous yoni egg (“When asked to shove an egg-shaped rock up our vaginas for $66, a healthier nation might have said, ‘Heck no!’ instead of ‘How far?’”), the list likens these mundane items to ancient relics in their capacity to speak to our particular way of life.

We worked with artist LaurentAllard to illustrate these “artifacts” across a series of interior spaces inspired by colonial-era house museums. The deadpan juxtaposition of contemporary objects and formal historical settings playfully reinforces Keegin’s framing.
