The Archive as Liberation by Aaron Turner

The Archive as Liberation brings together artists and writers to engage in dialogue around archival photographic methods, including the participants’ role in documenting, interrogating, and understanding experiences, both individual and collective.

It features artists AndreBradley, ChisatoHughes, calistalyon, RaymondThompsonJr., HarrisonWalker, and SavannahWood, with writing by Andrew Martinez, Alec Kaus, Aaron Turner, Amelia Wallen, and Donasia Tillery. Each visual artist is represented by a colored shape that’s used as wayfinding throughout the book.

Content slips off the book’s pages, imparting a sense of freedom and mold-breaking.

Across the book, various cuts—both slab serif and monospace—and sizes of type from the same family are implemented in response to different texts, underscoring a feeling of mixed sources and authors.

The book features a number of inserts including an excerpt of Andre Bradley’s Dark Archives, reprinted as a facsimile of the original publication; a fold out poster by calista lyons; and vellum pages printed with work by Raymond Thompson, Jr.
